Kenya Railways is set to elevate rail travel in the country with the introduction of new luxury first class SGR coaches scheduled for rollout by July 2026. The upgrade signals a major shift in passenger experience on the Standard Gauge Railway, positioning it closer to premium air travel standards in terms of comfort, service, and onboard amenities.
The new first class coaches are designed to deliver a business-class airline experience on rail, featuring onboard Wi-Fi, fully reclining seats with blankets, extra legroom, and personal entertainment screens. Passengers will also benefit from enhanced privacy and comfort, reflecting a broader push to modernize long-distance travel between Nairobi and Mombasa.
In addition to seating and connectivity improvements, the service will include a first class dining experience with onboard dinner service and upgraded hospitality offerings. One of the standout features is the inclusion of onboard bathing facilities, further reinforcing the premium positioning of the new coaches as a multi-hour luxury travel experience.
The rollout follows earlier upgrades to economy-class coaches and reflects Kenya Railways’ ongoing efforts to improve efficiency, passenger satisfaction, and competitiveness in the transport sector. Currently, a first class Nairobi–Mombasa ticket is priced at KSh 4,500, though adjustments are expected once the enhanced services are fully introduced.
As demand for comfortable and efficient intercity travel continues to grow, the new SGR first class experience is expected to reshape expectations around rail transport in Kenya. By combining convenience, luxury, and technology, the upgrade positions rail travel as a strong alternative for both business and leisure passengers on one of the country’s busiest transport corridors.
