Kenya is strengthening its collaboration with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to expand digital skills development and create more opportunities for Kenyan talent to compete in the global technology market.
The discussions took place during a government engagement with AWS in Nairobi, involving Principal Secretary for ICT and Digital Economy John Kipchumba Tanui, Cabinet Secretary for ICT and the Digital Economy William Kabogo Gitau, AWS Public Sector Lead for Sub-Saharan Africa Robin Njiru and the AWS Nairobi team.
Skills development emerged as a key area of focus, with the AWS re/Start programme having certified and placed more than 3,000 young Kenyans in jobs since 2021, recording a 45% placement rate.
AWS Academy is also operating in more than 20 tertiary institutions, while AWS has committed to training more than 10,000 university and TVET students annually through its wider digital skills programmes.
The collaboration also builds on a recently signed Memorandum of Understanding between AWS and the Konza Technopolis Development Authority, combining AWS cloud and AI capabilities with Konza’s smart-city infrastructure.
The Kenyan government says the partnership supports efforts to develop local digital talent, strengthen the country’s digital economy and enable Kenyan professionals to build technology solutions for global markets.
