Kenya Mobile Money Subscriptions Hit Record 95.31 Million as Transactions Reach KSh 761 Billion
Kenya’s mobile money subscriptions reached a record 95.31 million in August 2026, marking an increase of 7.85 million, or 8.98%, from 87.46 million recorded in August 2025. The growth highlights the continued expansion of mobile money services across the country.
The number of subscriptions has more than doubled from 43.56 million in August 2018 and increased more than 220 times compared with the 432,600 subscriptions recorded in August 2007.
The value of mobile money transactions rose by 10.56% to KSh 761.13 billion in August 2026, representing the highest monthly total since February 2024, when transactions reached a record KSh 790.80 billion.
The number of mobile money transactions also increased by 2.84% to 227.41 million during the month. The faster growth in transaction value compared with transaction volume indicates an increase in the average value per transaction.
Kenya’s active mobile money agent network expanded by 24.92% year-on-year, adding 112,448 agents from 451,157 in August 2025. This growth reflects the continued expansion of the infrastructure supporting mobile money services and access to digital financial transactions.
However, the agent network contracted from 575,400 agents in July 2026 to 563,605 in August, representing a monthly decline of 11,795 agents.
The latest figures highlight the continued importance of mobile money in Kenya’s digital financial ecosystem, as subscription numbers and transaction values remain elevated while the agent network experiences month-to-month fluctuations.
