Kenya Railways is set to extend the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) from Syokimau to Nairobi CBD, a project aimed at eliminating the long-standing last-mile challenge for passengers travelling between the city centre and the current terminus.
According to Business Daily, the planned 15-kilometre extension will follow the existing metre-gauge railway corridor through Embakasi, Imara Daima, Donholm and Makadara before terminating at Nairobi Central Station. The new passenger service will include stations at Imara Daima, Makadara and Nairobi CBD.
The extension will allow passengers to board SGR trains directly from Nairobi’s central business district, reducing reliance on the ageing metre-gauge railway, matatus and taxis for the final leg of their journeys. The project is expected to improve convenience, reduce travel time and enhance the overall passenger experience.
Infrastructure improvements will also form part of the project, including upgrades to a flood-prone section of the metre-gauge line, construction of a bridge over the Mukuru River and the rebuilding of the Likoni bridge to improve operational reliability and network resilience.
While the cost of the extension has not been disclosed, the project is expected to form part of the KSh28 billion Nairobi Railway City initiative, which aims to modernise the capital’s rail transport infrastructure and strengthen urban mobility.
