Kenya has taken another step towards strengthening its digital creator economy through a new partnership involving Wapi Pay PTE LTD and Volcano Engine, the cloud computing and artificial intelligence arm of ByteDance, aimed at connecting African creators with global audiences and new revenue opportunities.
Announced by Cabinet Secretary for Information, Communications and the Digital Economy William Kabogo Gitau during a visit to Beijing, the collaboration will establish the Tazama creator platform in Kenya under the Memorandum of Understanding between Kenya and China. The platform will provide creators with AI-powered content tools, localisation services and integrated payment solutions to help them monetize their work and reach audiences in China and other international markets.
According to the Cabinet Secretary, the initiative goes beyond creating economic opportunities by strengthening cultural exchange between Africa and China. The platform will enable African stories, music and creative content to reach one of the world’s largest digital audiences while opening new international opportunities for creators without requiring them to leave their home countries.
The partnership will also promote African language content, beginning with Kiswahili, helping creators preserve their cultural identity while expanding their global reach. In addition, Kenya expects the collaboration to support digital tourism by showcasing the country’s culture, heritage and tourism destinations to international audiences through digital platforms.
The government says the initiative aligns with Kenya’s broader digital economy strategy, reinforcing its commitment to supporting innovation, digital skills development and the creator economy while positioning the country as a gateway for digital content and innovation across Africa.
