Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank) Kenya has begun the search for a new Managing Director after its Nigerian parent company recalled Jubril Adeniji at the end of his tenure, marking a leadership transition as the lender looks to strengthen its position in Kenya’s competitive banking market.
Adeniji, who was appointed Managing Director in 2023 after leading GTBank Tanzania, will remain in office for the next 90 days while the bank seeks regulatory approval for his successor. During his tenure, GTBank Kenya focused on improving the quality of its loan portfolio, strengthening governance and internal controls, and implementing a strategy aimed at increasing market share.
The Board thanked Adeniji for his leadership and contributions, noting that his tenure helped position the bank for its next phase of growth. The lender also assured customers, employees, regulators and shareholders that operations will continue without disruption throughout the leadership transition.
The bank has not announced a successor or indicated whether the next Managing Director will be appointed internally or from within the wider GTCO Group. Any appointment will require approval from the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK).
The leadership transition comes as Kenya’s banking sector continues to experience executive changes amid rising regulatory capital requirements, growing competition and increased investment in digital banking. Recent appointments across the industry highlight the ongoing race among lenders to strengthen leadership and accelerate digital transformation.
