Greek multinational AMACO Energy Group is proposing a $1.5 billion HERCULES project in Mombasa, Kenya, combining LNG-based power generation, cooling infrastructure and AI data centres.
Founder and CEO Theodore Theodoropoulos is in Nairobi engaging Kenyan officials over the proposal, which is aimed at reducing dependence on the national electricity grid while supporting growing demand for data-centre infrastructure.
Kenya’s electricity demand reached a record 2,439MW in December 2025, an increase of 151MW year-on-year. Globally, data centres consumed about 415TWh of electricity in 2024, with demand projected to reach 945TWh by 2030.
The proposed project could position Mombasa as a location for energy-intensive digital infrastructure while connecting power generation and data-centre capacity within a single development.
However, HERCULES remains at the proposal stage, with financing, prospective customers, water requirements and environmental considerations yet to be resolved.
