Kenya’s State Department for ICT and Digital Economy is exploring collaboration with Equity Group to strengthen digital infrastructure, expand financial inclusion and support regional trade as the country advances its digital economy.
John Kipchumba Tanui, Principal Secretary in the State Department for ICT and Digital Economy, met James Mwangi, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Equity Group, and his team at the group’s headquarters on 6 October 2026.
The discussions focused on connecting digital infrastructure with financial services and enterprise development. The proposed collaboration aims to improve access to financial solutions, reduce barriers for businesses and create opportunities for enterprises to reach new markets across Kenya and the wider African region.
Tanui highlighted the importance of Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) in enabling more efficient transactions and expanding economic participation. Digital payments, financing and market access solutions were also discussed as ways to help small businesses and underserved communities participate more fully in the formal economy.
The engagement reflects Kenya’s ambition to build an integrated digital ecosystem through cooperation between government, financial institutions, technology providers and businesses. The shared objective is to translate digital transformation into practical benefits that support enterprise growth, regional commerce and inclusive economic development.
