Airtel Kenya has announced the appointment of Djibril Tobe as its new Managing Director, effective June 30, 2026, marking the beginning of a new leadership chapter for one of Kenya’s leading telecommunications providers. Tobe succeeds Ashish Malhotra, who has been appointed Chief Executive Officer of Indus Towers Limited Africa after successfully leading Airtel Kenya through a period of remarkable growth and transformation. The leadership transition reflects Airtel Africa’s commitment to strengthening its regional leadership while ensuring continuity in delivering innovative telecommunications and digital financial services to millions of customers across Kenya.
Djibril Tobe brings more than two decades of leadership experience spanning telecommunications, consulting, and the consumer goods industry. Prior to his appointment, he served as Managing Director of Airtel Congo B, where he played a significant role in driving operational excellence, business expansion, and customer growth. His extensive experience across diverse African markets positions him well to lead Airtel Kenya as the company continues to invest in network expansion, digital innovation, financial inclusion, and enhanced customer experiences in an increasingly competitive telecommunications landscape.
The appointment follows an impressive four-year tenure by Ashish Malhotra, under whose leadership Airtel Kenya achieved significant milestones across multiple areas of the business. During his time at the helm, the company expanded its subscriber base from 16 million to more than 24 million customers, reflecting strong consumer confidence and sustained market growth. Airtel Kenya also doubled its revenue, rolled out more than 2,000 additional network sites to strengthen nationwide connectivity, and significantly enhanced its network infrastructure to improve service quality and customer experience across the country.
One of the most notable achievements during Malhotra’s leadership was the rapid growth of Airtel Money, which strengthened its position in Kenya’s highly competitive mobile financial services market. Airtel Money’s market share increased from just 2 percent to 11 percent, highlighting the company’s growing role in advancing digital payments and financial inclusion. These accomplishments underscore Airtel Kenya’s broader strategy of combining telecommunications infrastructure with innovative financial technology solutions to deliver greater value for individuals, businesses, and underserved communities while supporting Kenya’s expanding digital economy.
As Djibril Tobe assumes leadership, Airtel Kenya enters its next phase with a strong operational foundation and clear momentum for future growth. His appointment is expected to build on the achievements of the past four years while accelerating innovation, expanding network coverage, strengthening digital financial services, and deepening customer engagement. With Kenya continuing to position itself as one of Africa’s leading digital economies, Airtel Kenya’s leadership transition signals its ambition to remain at the forefront of telecommunications, connectivity, and digital transformation, driving sustainable growth and creating greater opportunities for customers, businesses, and the wider economy.
