Kenya has commissioned a new Jitume ICT Hub at the Kenya School of TVET’s Moiben Campus in Uasin Gishu County, expanding access to digital skills training and online work opportunities for young people.
President William Ruto commissioned the facility, according to John Kipchumba Tanui, Principal Secretary in the State Department for ICT and Digital Economy. The hub forms part of the government’s broader digital agenda to improve access to technology, skills development and economic opportunities beyond major urban centres.
The Moiben facility brings Kenya’s national network to 391 equipped digital hub sites, with a combined total of 23,387 devices. The programme has also supported the rollout of Virtual Desktop Infrastructure at 186 of the country’s 253 technical and vocational education and training (TVET) institutions.
More than 115,000 trainees and young people have participated in the programme, which aims to equip them with digital skills and connect them to opportunities in remote work and online services. The hubs are designed to help young people access international clients and employment opportunities without needing to relocate.
Tanui acknowledged the contributions of the Kenya School of TVET, Konza Technopolis, the Communications Authority of Kenya, the ICT Authority and the National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF) to the initiative.
Implementation remains ongoing, with 67 TVET institutions still awaiting equipment. Extending the programme to these institutions is expected to widen access to digital infrastructure, training and online economic opportunities.
The Jitume initiative is part of Kenya’s wider effort to develop digital skills and support participation in the online economy. Continued expansion of the network will be important in reaching more young people and educational institutions across the country.
