Tether and Nairobi Securities Exchange Partner to Explore Digital Asset Innovation in Kenya
Tether has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) to explore opportunities in digital asset education, tokenization and financial market innovation in Kenya.
The partnership aims to strengthen investor knowledge, improve market efficiency and assess the potential application of distributed ledger technology within Kenya’s capital markets.
Through the collaboration, Tether and NSE will examine emerging solutions including tokenized securities, instant settlement mechanisms and digital onboarding processes designed to align with Kenya’s regulatory requirements.
The NSE, with a market capitalization of approximately $26.4 billion, remains a key institution in Kenya’s financial ecosystem, connecting investors with opportunities while supporting companies seeking access to capital.
Under the MoU, the two organizations will develop investor education initiatives focused on digital-era capital markets. The programme will include training sessions, workshops and structured learning opportunities targeting NSE-listed brokers and retail investors.
The partnership will also explore blockchain-based market infrastructure to support tokenization and instant settlement of securities through distributed ledger technology. This includes evaluating opportunities for fractional ownership of securities through Tether’s Hadron platform, potentially enabling broader access for local and diaspora investors.
Another focus area will be the development of secure digital onboarding processes tailored to Kenya’s regulatory environment, including improvements around Anti-Money Laundering (AML) and Know Your Customer (KYC) procedures.
Tether and NSE will further assess the potential of Real World Asset (RWA) tokenization, exploring how digital platforms could support the issuance, trading and management of tokenized securities and other financial instruments.
The collaboration will also evaluate instant and atomic settlement mechanisms that could improve transaction efficiency by reducing traditional settlement timelines. Where regulatory frameworks allow, the partners will assess the potential role of USD₮ as a digital settlement infrastructure layer to enhance liquidity and support capital flows.
Tether Chief Executive Officer Paolo Ardoino said the partnership reflects the growing evolution of digital assets beyond cryptocurrency applications towards broader institutional and financial market use cases.
NSE Chief Executive Officer Frank Mwiti said the collaboration supports the exchange’s 2025–2029 Strategic Plan, which focuses on leveraging technology, increasing market participation and expanding investment opportunities.
The partnership represents a step towards exploring how emerging technologies can modernize Kenya’s capital markets while maintaining strong standards of market integrity, security and regulatory compliance.
