Mount Kenya University (MKU) has launched a Cloud Computing Initiative at its Thika Campus, expanding its digital-skills partnership with China’s Nanjing Zhongxing Xinyada Information Technology Co. Ltd (Xinyada) and a wider network of Chinese higher-education institutions. The initiative was launched on 21 September 2026 and is aimed at strengthening digital skills, innovation and technology-driven learning at the university.
The initiative builds on an MoU signed between MKU and Xinyada in September 2024. Since then, the collaboration has expanded into a consortium involving seven organisations, including five Chinese higher-education institutions: Nanjing Vocational College of Information Technology, Zhejiang Post and Telecommunication College, Suzhou Higher Vocational School, Shandong Vocational College of Industry, and Hebei Institute of Mechanical and Electrical Technology.
The wider partnership covers digital education and training in areas including 5G, artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, fibre and cable installation, cloud computing and drone accreditation. It also includes curriculum development, joint research, student and staff exchanges, internship and employment pathways, and support for the China-Africa Skills Supermarket project.
MKU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Deogratius Jaganyi said the partnerships provide Kenyan students and professionals with opportunities to develop practical skills and pursue internationally recognised accreditations in emerging technology fields. The university says the initiative is part of its broader strategy to integrate AI and modern technologies into education while strengthening technical and vocational training.
Xinyada’s establishment of the cloud computing facility is expected to strengthen MKU’s ICT infrastructure and support the university’s development as a hub for cloud technology training and digital innovation. The collaboration also aligns with MKU’s role as a United Nations Academic Impact Hub Chair for Sustainable Development Goal 9 on Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure for 2025–2030.
